Introduction to 澳門

Macau is best known for

  • its World Heritage historic centre with a unique combination of European architecture and ultra-modern buildings

  • being China’s only casino city with a huge choice of entertainment options

  • A strong Portuguese influence due to its colonial history.

My Favourite Facts about Macau

  • The city is divided between one main peninsula in the north + one main island in the south.

The main island was artificially created by joining two smaller islands with the Cotai Strip reclaimed from the sea.

  • One of the most densely populated places on Earth with one of the world’s longest life expectancies.

  • The world’s biggest gambling city, generates around 3-4 times more revenue than Las Vegas, but is 11 times smaller than Las Vegas in size.

  • Macau is pronounced ào mén in Mandarin, meaning “inlet gate”.

What I like particularly about Macau 👍🏻

  • The sheer amount of classical architecture gives Macau a vibe unlike any other city in China.

The old town is also easily walkable!

  • There is something very special about the combination of Portuguese and Macanese cuisine.

I love Portuguese tarts and almond cookies!

  • Due to the city’s compact size, it’s easy to explore different parts of Macau in a couple of days compared to most cities in China.

Recommended Days in Macau 📅

  • 1-2 days, longer if you’re crazy about European architecture or gambling!

Best Time to Visit ☀️

  • Mid-October to Mid-May for the most comfortable temperatures. Can get a little cold in December to February.

  • Extremely hot and humid during the summer, 30-35C in the daytime and 25-30C at night. Try not to become a Portuguese tart!

(Macau has similar temperatures to Hong Kong. See my Weather Dashboard for temperature ranges by month in Hong Kong)

Points of Interest / Attractions to Visit 🌆

⬇️ You can find ticket prices + directions after this section

⭐ = my most recommended attractions (S being my favourite)

The Old Town - a UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • Ruins of St Paul’s 大三巴牌坊 ⭐S - one of the famous icons of Macau. This is the stone facade of a Jesuit church completed in 1640.

If you look carefully, the carvings combine Western and Eastern elements, making it a very unique design.

  • Fortaleza do Monte (Mount Fortress) 大炮台 ⭐S - this is a definite recommend from me!

One of my favourite places to see the Macau skyline from different vantage points. I spent almost an hour taking shots of the skyline.

The fortress is filled with 32 original cannons from the 1600s. See if you can find the one where doves and pigeons are hanging out! It was used by the city to defend against a Dutch invasion in 1622.

  • Senado Square 議事亭前地 ⭐S - one of the iconic landmarks is the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Macau), first built in 1569. I call it the White House.

My top tip: don’t rush off, make sure you explore the surrounding streets. You might discover something you like.

  • Guia Lighthouse 東望洋燈塔 - this eye-catching lighthouse was built in 1865 and sits next to a chapel on top of a hilltop fort. Another fantastic place to see Macau and the ocean from high up!

  • A-Ma Temple 媽閣廟 - the city’s name apparently originated from here! This is a temple that was built in 1488, over 500 years old!

  • Macau Tower 澳門塔 - the city’s tallest structure, standing at 338m.

I was surprised to discover bungee jumps and skywalks for those who aren’t afraid of heights.

Not for me though, I was happy with the observation decks and the revolving buffet restaurant.

  • Poly MGM Museum - a museum showcasing ancient artifacts from dynasties throughout China’s history. One of the unique things is the immersive use of movable LED screens.

The Main Island (Taipa and Cotai Strip)

  • Taipa Houses 龍環葡韻住宅 - a collection of 5 striking mint green and white villas displaying exhibits and artifacts from Macau’s history. I was surprised to see a restaurant in one of the villas serving Macanese and Portuguese dishes!

  • Rua Do Cunha 官也街 ⭐ - the best place for street food if you ask me. Come here at sunset or night. A very lively atmosphere!

  • Casino Resorts - 12 in total. Just pick 1-2 casinos if you’re only in Macau for one day. They’re absolutely massive.

Some of the most popular ones are:

    • The Venetian Macau 威尼斯人 to see an indoor replica of Venice and take a gondola ride. This is the world’s 2nd largest casino.

    • Parisian Macau 澳門巴黎人 to see a 50% replica of the Eiffel Tower.

    • Londoner Macau 澳門倫敦人 to see a replica of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

    • Studio City 新濠影匯 to see the world’s highest figure of 8 Ferris Wheel and Art Deco architecture.

    • Wynn Palace 永利皇宮 to ride the SkyLab cable car and see water light shows.

    • Galaxy Macau 澳門銀河 to visit a rooftop water park with a wave pool and rapids.

    • City of Dreams 新濠天地 to see the House of Dancing Water, an acrobatics show on water and futuristic architecture.

  • Macau Sightseeing Cruise - a fantastic way to see Macau from the sea, especially if you’re there on a sunny day! Availability is subject to time of year you visit.

  • Hac Sa Beach 黑沙海灘 - one of the best beaches in Macau and my top choices to get away from the city

  • Fisherman’s Wharf 澳門漁人碼頭 - a leisure destination filled with European streetscapes and a Colosseum replica next to the waterfront. You can come here for cafes and restaurants too.

  • Giant Panda Pavilion 澳門大熊貓館 - if you don’t have a chance to see pandas elsewhere in China, check out the 4 giant pandas. Red pandas are also next door!

How to Get Around 🚇

  • The old town is easily walkable. I personally didn’t use any transport to get around.

  • Macau Light Rail is my no.1 choice for travelling on the main island between Taipa and the Cotai Strip.

Where Should You Stay 🛏️

  • Macau Peninsula is home to the historic old town and is my personal recommendation.

I much prefer the street vibes here and everything is a lot closer together. You’ll save a lot of time exploring.

  • Cotai district is a better choice if you’re into your gambling, entertainment, and shopping malls.

It’s filled with shiny, iconic buildings.

  • Taipa village is just 5 minutes away from Cotai by taxi/light rail.

Home to Rua Do Cunha with plenty of food choices. Chill vibes.

  • If you want stunning views, hotels like Mandarin Oriental Macau and W Macau - Studio City have views of the city skyline from different locations.

Remember to book rooms with a skyline view!

What Should You Eat 🥢

  • Macau has famous for its fusion of Macanese and Portuguese dishes.

You’ll also find a lot of Cantonese and European choices.

  • Some Macau specialties that I recommend:

    • pork chop bun | 豬扒包 | jū páa bāau

    • minchi (minced meat with potatoes and fried egg on rice) | 免治 | míhn jih

    • Baked Portuguese chicken in coconut curry sauce | 葡國雞 | pòuh gwok gāi

    • Portuguese tart | 葡撻 | pòuh tàat

    • almond cookies | 杏仁餅 | hang yán béng

    • African chicken (multi-spice grilled/roasted chicken) | 非洲雞 | fēi jāu gāi

    • dim sum (many varieties)

    • roasted meats (see my article about 80 Cantonese dishes here)

  • Check out my list of 60 dishes to try in China

Where Should I Eat 🧑🏻‍🍳

  • Ruins of St Paul’s to Senado Square in the old town.

I like to explore the side streets, discover secret gems, and try out down-to-earth restaurants. Don’t be afraid to venture further out, there are hundreds of choices!

  • Rua do Cunha - one of the island’s main pedestrian areas for street food, snacks, and restaurants.

  • Cotai Strip - this is where you’ll find most of the high-class restaurants and buffets. Many are located inside the resorts and hotels.

  • Note that some small restaurants may only take cash. Macau has its own currency, the Macanese Pataca, but you can also use Hong Kong Dollars.

Don’t forget the streetside restaurants. You can use OpenRice or Dianping to check out the food and reviews.
