Introduction to 苏州

Suzhou is best known for

  • its mesmerising classical gardens, 9 of which are recognised as World Heritage Sites

  • its canals and water towns, leading some to call it the “Venice of the East”

  • the popular Chinese saying, “Above there is heaven. Below there are Suzhou and Hangzhou”.

A Few Facts about Suzhou

  • The city was founded in 514 BC and is one of the most prosperous cities in eastern China today.

  • Around 42% of the city core is water. You’ll notice it.

  • It’s known as a capital of silk alongside Hangzhou.

    ⬇️

What I like particularly about Suzhou 👍🏻

  • The village vibe of Qilishantang, Suzhou’s most iconic street. Right in the centre of the city.

  • The gardens and canals are so tranquil and peaceful. Completely different vibe to Shanghai.

  • Squirrel fish is one of my favourite dishes. I recommend you check it out.

Recommended Days in Suzhou 📅

  • Minimum 1-2 days, although I recommend spending 1 day overnight. If you only come for the day, you’ll only get a tiny taste of Suzhou.

Best Time to Visit ☀️

  • March to May + September to November for the most comfortable temperatures.

  • Temperatures can rise to high 30s in the summer months and drop to below 0C in the winter months

(See my Weather Dashboard - look at Shanghai (next to Suzhou) for temperature ranges by month)

3 Things To See + Photographic Spots Not To Be Missed 📷

  • Admiring the classical gardens, especially Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lion Grove Garden

  • Walking along Pingjiang Lu and grabbing iconic photos of the canals and stone bridges

  • Staring at the Pants building (Gate to the East) from Jinji Lake.

    ⬇️

3 Things To Do 🚶🏻

  • Strolling through Qilishantang at sunset. This is an absolutely gorgeous view.

  • Touring Suzhou Museum containing ancient artifacts across thousands of years

  • Visiting a water town like Tongli or Zhouzhuang

    ⬇️

Unique Experiences to Consider

  • Riding a canal boat in Pingjiang Lu or Shantang Street.

  • Dressing up in hanfu and get photos taken in front of the canals and traditional architecture.

Points of Interest / Attractions to Visit 🌆

⭐ = my most recommended attractions

Old City

  • Pingjiang Lu 平江路 ⭐- an ancient cobbled canalside street with traditional architecture and stone bridges.

Dating back to the 1200s in the Song dynasty. I felt like I had gone back in time with all the traditional architecture and visitors dressed in hanfu.

  • Qilishantang 七里山塘 (Shantang Street) ⭐ - a canalside street dating back to 825 AD during the Tang Dynasty.

The view at sunset was absolutely stunning and the night-time lighting is gorgeous. Don’t miss this!

  • Humble Administrator’s Garden 拙政园⭐ - this classical garden from 1525 AD is my personal favourite!

I loved the ponds, greenery, pavilions, and the spectacular architecture. Even with a lot of crowds, I really enjoyed the relaxing scenery and could have spent most of the day in here.

  • Lion Grove Garden 狮子林 - classical garden dating to 1342 in the Yuan Dynasty.

My favourite things were the limestone caves. And of course, the rocks that look like lions. Really enjoyed the beautiful pavilions and walking paths over water.

  • Lingering Garden 留园 - classical garden from 1593 AD in the Ming dynasty.

The unique thing about it is the four landscape zones. A must see for architecture and photography lovers.

I took so many stunning photos here, considering it’s not that big.

  • Suzhou Museum 苏州博物馆 ⭐ - a striking museum blending traditional Chinese and modern architecture, designed by the architect who designed Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong.

I was totally fascinated by the huge collection of ancient artifacts and paintings.

  • Beisi Pagoda 北寺塔 ⭐- a nine-storey 76m octagonal pagoda from the Ming dynasty and the tallest structure in the old city. You can climb it to get a panorama of Suzhou.

  • Hanshan Temple 寒山寺 ⭐- a 1,500 year old temple dating to 519 AD and named after the Buddhist monk, Hanshan. The bells are enormous and the Puming Pagoda is stunning.

  • Baodaiqiao 宝带桥 - China’s longest multi-arch stone bridge from ancient times. It has 53 spans and is 317m long.

  • Tianjingge 天镜阁 - an iconic island courtyard house surrounded by water. You can walk through the nearby islands to get a spectacular view of it.

  • Xiangmen Ancient City Wall 相门古城墙 - a 650m section of the old city wall east of Pingjiang Lu. There’s water gates and watchtowers to see.

Alternatively, you can visit Panmen (盘门) - the oldest surviving section built during the Warring States period.

New City

  • Gate To The East 东方之门 ⭐- a 301m iconic skyscraper known as “The Pants” building. This went viral around the world when it was finished. As an engineer, I really like the unique look of this building.

  • Jinji Lake 金鸡湖 - the biggest lake in the city’s downtown area. It’s located right in front of the pants building.

I took a walk around the lake perimeter. A great place to relax.

  • Taihu 太湖 - one of China’s biggest freshwater lakes. There’s islands, villages, museums, and the famous Taihu hairy crabs! You can cycle along the lake. Allow at least 1 day if you’re going.

  • Suzhou IFS 苏州国际金融中心 - the city’s tallest building (450m). It looks absolutely massive compared to everything around it.

  • Guanqianjie 观前街 - the main pedestrian street in the city with plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops

Water Towns

  • Zhouzhuang 周庄 ⭐- one of the most popular water towns in China with a lot of restaurants and souvenir shops.

  • Tongli 同里 ⭐- another popular water town closer to the centre of Suzhou.

It felt less touristy than Zhouzhuang to me. Personally, I prefer Tongli for its huge number of stone bridges and community vibes.
